Niccolo Machiavelli was a 16th century Italian philosopher who wrote a political treatise entitled, The Prince. This work became famous in Shakespeare’s world because it advocated the need for ruthlessness, duplicity and cruelty in the struggle for political power. The often misquoted “the ends justify the means” has worked its way into the literature creating the term “Machiavellian” that is applied to characters like Iago. What Machiavelli said was “in the actions of all men, and especially of Princes where there is no impartial arbiter, one must consider the final result.” In other words, in the area of politics where the end result is for the greater good of all men, ethical considerations can be temporarily set aside.
